Changing Lives

My clients are all very special to me.  Each one brings something different into my life.  At the same time I hope I am making a difference in theirs.

At the end of every year to show my appreciation, I make a donation in their honor.  In December of 2022 one of the organizations where I made a donation was an Israeli organization called Yad LaKashish ā€“ Lifeline for the Old.

Five days each week 220 low income elderly enter the workshops at Yad LaKashish in Jerusalem and become empowered through meaningful work opportunities.  They are also the recipients of  essential social and financial benefits.  Everyday, Holocaust survivors, new immigrants (mainly from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia), and local elderly create handmade products, under the guidance of professional artists.

A few weeks ago I was able to tour Yad LaKashish.  I was able to see first hand the creative daily work opportunities.  For example, Yad LaKashish receives shredded paper from the Municipality of Jerusalem which is then recycled and made into usable paper.  A number of the elderly artisans are involved in the recycling and making of the paper.  The artisans use the paper to create greeting cards, placemats, and notebooks.

There is also a metal shop where the artisans make ritual objects and jewelry.

Along with the social benefits, each of the needy artisans receives a comprehensive Social Welfare Package to improve their quality of life.  This Social Welfare Package includes a monthly financial stipend, dental care subsidies, monthly national health insurance premiums, a daily hot nutritious meal, monetary holiday bonuses, and cultural outings.

Because of Yad LaKashish, 220 people have a reason to get up every morning.  They feel their lives are productive and they are not alone.

Iā€™m grateful to have had the opportunity to visit.  The organization is doing wonderful and needed work.  And the artisans make unbelievably great products.  I even purchased a pair of earrings.
