Learning is Fun
I recently spent two days at a fitness conference. I usually find these conferences very intense and I try to absorb as much as I can in the short time that I’m there. It can be a little overwhelming. This year I think I chose my sessions wisely and I’m already using some of what I learned in my client sessions.
A friend asked me, “What do you do/learn at a fitness conference”? In general, like any conference, participants have a chance to learn and network with professionals in their field. The first day was part of the IDEA World Conference, a four-day annual event. Two sessions included ideas for working with older adults in the areas of balance and power, another session elaborated on a specific workout protocol, and a fourth dealt with our foot health.
The next day I participated in the Functional Aging Institute Summit. I attended one session titled Healthy Aging: The Great Disruptor, which focused on reshaping our understanding of what it means to age well. I also attended sessions relating to brain health and a separate one on hip osteoarthritis.
The most fun sessions were the two I took that demonstrated strength and balance drills for active seniors. I had the opportunity to engage with other fitness instructors in actually executing the drills that were being taught and we were able to discuss the ideas that were being presented. I had previously taken part in Zoom Webinars on these topics but participating in person was much more fun and a much better learning experience.
I find these conferences very educational. Over the years they have helped me refine my skills and methods for working with older adults, especially in the areas of using fun drills and inexpensive equipment to help us all gain strength and balance while also improving brain health.
Learning can be fun!!!
