October is the New January
We are now towards the end of October – the month when we really see the leaves turn color and pumpkin spice can be found in everything from coffee to popcorn.
Ann-Marie Alcantara, in an article in the Wall Street Journal, talks about how October is now a time for people to reset their goals. This idea even has a name, “October Theory”. Alcantara says that people are rethinking their approach to the last three months of the year. It is a time to set goals, pick up new habits, and reflect. Sounds just like what we do for the New Year.
It also sounds like “The Third Act of Life”. Many see the time after retirement as a time for self-discovery, reflection, and reinvention, and for letting go of old identities and embracing new ones.
The article continues to say the psychologists say being introspective at any time of the year helps people develop habits and routines. It is often the key to following through on your goals.
Whether you are moved by the change in seasons, the beginning of the school year, or realizing that the calendar year is almost over and you want to make sure you have accomplished your goals, the notion of October Theory is catching on. I would add that clarifying your goals and creating new habits now sets you up for success when you begin the new year in January.
For some, solidifying fitness goals now when the gyms are less full seems optimal. You can get a head start now without having to fight for equipment or a place in a class.
