The Best Vacation Workout
As summer approaches and many make travel plans, I often share with my clients information on equipment that packs well and exercises that can be done in small hotel rooms or the hotel stairwell where one might be staying, This information is helpful not just when on vacation but also when you need to travel for business or some other occasion. Just because you are out of town doesn’t mean that your exercise program must be on vacation.
When we travel out of town, even for vacation, we may experience some stress. Our schedules are different. We eat different foods and do not eat at regular times. Our sleep may suffer.
Exercise can help manage some of that physical and mental stress and increase the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine in the brain. These chemicals can boost mood, relieve depression and anxiety, and help you feel happier.
Tips for exercising on vacation/out of town:
1. Go for a walk or run. One of my favorite things to do when I go out of town is to walk the area where I’m staying to help get my bearings. I see great murals, shops I want to visit, and beautiful scenery. You don’t have to go long or far. Just getting outside is beneficial. You will see many others doing the same thing. Here are pictures from my recent trip during my morning walk.
2. Find a fitness class. Many hotels offer classes. There are also gyms that offer day passes or some sort of trial classes. In April I attended a class at my hotel. We were able to meet outside which was an added benefit. (I’m the redhead waving).
3. Be creative in how you choose to relax and de-stress. Finding a good spot to meditate or just removing yourself from what is going on in your life may give you the boost you need.
